Am südlichsten Punkt der kontinentalen USA liegt die Insel Key West mit gleichnamiger Stadt. Der Ruhm der Insel beruht auf seiner Geschichte und seiner Exzentrik. Eine herrliche Atmosphäre findet man in dem historischen Gebiet „Old Town“ mit alten, pastellfarbenen Gebäuden. Schriftsteller Ernest Hemingway war einer der bekanntesten Bewohner Key Wests. Heute kann man in Old Town das Ernest Hemingway Museum besuchen und dort sogar heiraten. Key West lässt sich am Besten bei einer Städtetour erkunden, hier bekommt man einen wunderbaren Eindruck über den südlichsten Zipfel der Vereinigten Staaten mit seinen zahlreichen Sehenswürdigkeiten. Die Geschichte der ersten Bahnverbindung nach Key West erfährt man am ausführlichsten im Flagler Station Over-Sea Railway Museum. Im Fort East Martello Museum & Gardens sind verschiedene Sammlungen von Artefakten sowie nostalgische militärische Gegenstände ausgestellt. Der wunderschöne Leuchtturm Key Wests bietet einen traumhaften Blick über Key West und den angrenzenden Ozean. Die südlichste Spitze von Key West ist der Southernmost Point, von hier sind nur 144 Kilometer bis nach Kuba. Beliebtes Fotomotiv ist der Meilenstein mit der Aufschrift „90 Meilen nach Kuba“. Die Seefahrerwelt bewundert man am Besten im Mel Fisher Maritime Hertage Society Museum, Schätze aus gesunkenen Schiffen von unschätzbarem Wert sind ausgestellt. Diverse Bootstouren werden von Mallory Square aus angeboten. Key West ist über die Grenzen hinaus für seine Akzeptanz und Toleranz bekannt und lockt jährlich dutzende Homosexuelle. Alles ist in Key West ein bisschen anders, pinkfarbene Taxis und verrückte Persönlichkeiten sind keine Seltenheit. Ebenso vielfältig ist das Angebot an Pubs und Bars. Rund um die Duval Street spielt sich das Nachtleben ab. Dem Vergnügen sind hier fast keine Grenzen gesetzt. Die bekannte Green Parrot Bar oder die Two Friends Bar – langweilig wird es in Key West sicherlich nie.
