Landschaftliches Highlight und bekanntester Nationalpark der Vereinigten Staaten: der Grand Canyon erstreckt sich auf einer Länge von ungefähr 450 Kilometern von Norden nach Westen im Norden von Arizona. Die Entstehung der größten Schlucht der Welt durch den Colorado River begann bereits vor Millionen von Jahren. Heute sind Hauptanziehungspunkte die South Rim, die Südflanke des Grand Canyons sowie das touristische Zentrum des Nationalparks: das Grand Canyon Village. Neben der Parkverwaltung und dem Visitors Center befinden sich hier Hotels und Gastronomie. Hinsichtlich des Klimas weisen das Tal und die Ränder des Canyons große Temperaturunterschiede auf, was man bei den jeweiligen Aktivitäten beachten sollte. Gerade im Sommer sind die Temperaturen in der Schlucht um einiges höher als an den Rändern. Die Höhen- und Temperaturunterschiede sowie die daraus entstehende unterschiedliche Vegetation prägen das Gesamtbild des Gran Canyon. Unzählige Tier- und Pflanzenarten sind im Nationalpark beheimatet.
Auch heute noch gibt es zahlreiche traditionelle Stammesgebiete und Indianerreservate in Grand Canyon Nationalpark. Hierzu gehören die Walapi, die Hopi, die Havasupai, die Diné und die Kaibab mit ihren einzigartigen Kulturen und Traditionen.
Aktivitäten am Rand des Canyons
Neben der Erkundung der Aussichtspunkte bietet sich eine Wanderung zu Fuß am Rand des wunderschönen Canyons an. Das Hinabsteigen in die Schlucht wird nur erfahrenen Bergsteigern empfohlen, da sowohl Temperatur- als auch Höhenunterschiede tückisch sein können und so manchen Kletterprofi an seine Grenzen gebracht haben. Daher bietet es sich gerade für Touristen an, einen Helikopter- Rundflug über den Nationalpark zu machen, von oben sieht die Gesteinslandschaft noch gigantischer aus als aus der Nähe. Ausserdem werden Pferde- und Mauleseltouren für die Touristen angeboten. Vom Desert View und Bright Angel Point hat man einen traumhaften Blick auf die Schlucht, beide Aussichtspunkte sind durch befahrbare Straßen erreichbar und verfügen über Informationszentren. Wettereinflüsse haben im gesamten Nationalpark zahlreiche skurrile Gesteinsformationen zu Tage gebracht, das Angels Window in der Nähe des Bright Angel am North Rim ist eine davon. Seit dem Jahr 2007 ist der Grand Canyon um eine Attraktion reicher: der Grand Canyon Skywalk im Hualapai-Indianerreservat. Die über den Rand des Canyons hinausragende Aussichtsplattform mit gläsernem Boden über dem Colorado River erfordert Schwindelfreiheit: fast 1.100 Meter kann man von der hufeisenförmigen Plattform in die Tiefe schauen und einen unverwechselbaren Blick in das atemberaubende Tal werfen. Kameras und Handys sind hier allerdings verboten.
Aktivitäten im Canyon
Die bekanntesten Wege im Canyon sind der South Kaibab Trail und der Bright Angel Trail entlang des Bright Angel Creek. Da hier gerade in den Sommermonaten extrem hohe Temperaturen herrschen, sollte man an eine entsprechende Ausrüstung denken, Trinkwasser gilt es nur an den beiden Wegen. Angenehmer scheint dagegen eine Bootsfahrt auf dem Colorado River. Da dieser nur an wenigen Stellen zugänglich ist, kann eine Fahrt vom Lee’s Ferry bis zum schönen Diamond Creek einige Tage andauern. Der Colorado River ist eine echte Herausforderung für Wassersportler, Mountain-Rafting ist das Highlight schlechthin und wird dementsprechend stark nachgefragt. Das Übernachten innerhalb des Grand Canyon ist nur mit Erlaubnis möglich, die zeitnah vor der geplanten Reise beantragt werden sollte, da diese begrenzt und von großer Beliebtheit sind. Ohne Erlaubnis sind dagegen Tagestouren möglich.

Today the main attractions of the South Rim, the southern flank of the Grand Canyon, as well as the tourist center of the national park are: the Grand Canyon Village. In addition to the park headquarters and the Visitors Center are located here, hotels and restaurants. With regard to the climate of the valley and the edges of the canyons are major differences in temperature, which should be considered when the respective activities. Especially in summer the temperatures in the canyon are a bit higher than at the edges. Activities at the edge of the canyon
