Death Valley Nationalpark und Sehenswerte Orte
Trotz der nahen Lage zum Pazifischen Ozean ist der Death-Valley-Nationalpark die trockenste und heißeste Region in Nordamerika inmitten der Mojave-Wüste. Death Valley kann dennoch mit einigen ansehenswerten Orten trumpfen. Vor allem ist das Tal des Todes durch seine erstaunliche Landschaftsvielfalt attraktiv. Neben zahlreichen Vulkankratern dominieren in Death Valley markante Felsskulpturen und gigantische Sanddünen. An den Hängen der Black Mountains liegt die „Artists Palette“ mit ihren eindrucksvollen, vielfarbigen Gesteinsanordnungen. Der tiefste Punkt des amerikanischen Kontinents liegt in Badwater, die sich hier befindende Wetterstation hat schon Höchstwerte über 50 Grad Celsius gemessen. Weitere imponierende Orte im Tal sind die Barker Ranch, einst Zufluchtsort einer Sekte sowie Dante’s View. Dieser Aussichtspunkt liegt in 1669 Meter Höhe und bietet einen sagenhaften Blick über das Tal und die angrenzende Region. Der Devil’s Golf Course erhielt seinen Namen aufgrund der zerklüfteten und scharfkantigen Salzformationen, die nur durch ein Golfspiel des Teufels zustande kommen hätten können. Wer glaubt in dem von Gesteinen und Sand dominierten Nationalpark gäbe es keine Vegetation, der irrt: in Hidden Valley, einem Tal in einer abgelegenen Gegend der Cottonwood Mountains, verwandelt sich die Landschaft in ein wunderschönes Meer aus Blumen. Im Winter dagegen präsentiert sich hier eine eindrucksvolle Schneelandschaft mit einer unglaublichen Weite. Über das gesamte Tal verstreut befinden sich etliche stillgelegte Mienen. Eine Starwars-Kulisse hautnah erleben? Kein Problem im Death-Valley-Nationalpark! Die sagenhaften Mesquite Sand Dunes im nördlichen Bereich des Tals sind eine wahre Augenweide. Höchste der Dünen ist die Star Dune, das unweit entfernte Mesquite Springs ist Heimat vieler schöner Kakteen. Eindrucksvoll stellt sich auch der Mosaic Canyon im nordwestlichen Teil des Tals dar, dessen Gesteinsvorkommen so unterschiedlich sind, dass sich verschiedene Muster ergeben haben. Ein Museum an einem so entlegenen Ort? Das Fumace-Creek Museum sollte bei einer Reise in das Tal des Todes auf jeden Fall besichtigt werden, unter anderem wartet hier eine historische Lokomotive auf die Besucher. Nahe Furnance Creek befindet sich der schönste Aussichtspunkt des Death Valley: der Zabriskie Point. In so einer Gegend darf auch eine Geisterstadt nicht fehlen: Leadfield in der Nähe des Titus Canyon.

Highest of the dunes is the Star Dune, which is not far away Mesquite Springs, home of many beautiful cacti. Impressively, there is also the Mosaic Canyon is in the northwestern part of the valley, whose rock of so diverse that they have shown different patterns. A museum in such a remote place?
