Cape Canaveral Air Force Station

Vom Raketenstartgelände der U.S. Air Force starteten die ersten Raketen mit Menschen an Bord, die ersten Starts fanden im Jahr 1950 statt, darunter die bekannte Apollo 7. Der erste US-amerikanische Satellit Explorer 1 trat hier mit einer Jupiter-Rakete seine Reise ins All an. Im Jahr 1984 wurde die Cape Canaveral in die nationale Denkmalliste als National Historic Landmark aufgenommen. Heute starten von der Cape Canaveral Air Force Station nur noch Satelliten für militärische oder kommerzielle Zwecke.

John F. Kennedy Space Center

Das John F. Kennedy Space Center liegt nordwestlich der Cape Canaveral Air Force Station und ist der Weltraumbahnhof der NASA. Seit 1968 starten von hier aus alle bemannten Raumflüge der USA. Vor den heutzutage startenden Space Shuttles hoben hier die Apollo-Missionen zum Mond ab. Das Space Center ist in die vier Bereiche KSC Industrial Area, Launch Complex 39 mit zwei Startrampen und die Shuttle Landing Facility eingeteilt. Hinzu kommt ein touristisches Besucherzentrum. Das J.F. Kennedy Space Center stellt für die Region einen wesentlichen Wirtschaftsfaktor dar. Das Gebiet dient auch als Ort für zahlreiche Wildtiere, da etliche Bereiche des Geländes aus Sicherheitsgründen für Besucher nicht zugänglich sind. Die nördliche Spitze der Insel ist als Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge ausgewiesen.

Touristenmagnet ist der KSC Visitor Complex vor den Toren des John F. Kennedy Space Centers. Hier findet sich ein IMAX-3-D-Kino in welchem man dem Weltall für knapp eine halbe Stunde ganz nah sein kann. Neben der eher kommerziellen Unterhaltung bietet das Besucherzentrum eine Fülle an Informationen rund um die Geschichte der US-amerikanischen Raumfahrt und der einzelnen Raketen und Space Shuttles. Selbstverständlich kann man auch ein echtes Space Shuttle besichtigen. Es gibt zwei verschiedene Touren die durch das Raumfahrtzentrum führen, beide starten vom Besucherzentrum aus. Die rote Tour informiert über die Montagegebäude, das Startzentrum und die Ausbildung der Raumfahrt-Piloten. Die blaue Tour hingegen gibt einen Überblick über die Satelliten und Air Force Stationen. So ist für jeden Besucher eine individuelle Tour möglich. Mit einer Bustour über das weitläufige Gelände gelangt man zum eindrucksvollen Apollo/Saturn V Center wo sich eine der zwei Saturn-V-Raketen befindet. Virtuell dargeboten bekommt man die Geschichte der Raumfahrt in einem kleinen Theater: hier wird der Start bis zur Landung auf dem Mond dargestellt. Einmal selbst Astronaut sein und die Welt von oben betrachten: neuste Attraktion seit 2008 ist die „Shuttle Launch Experience“. Den Besuchern wird der Start eines Space Shuttles simuliert. Wer den Start eines echten Shuttles live miterleben will, sollte sich rechtzeitig über die Termine informieren um so an die heißbegehrten und seltenen Tickets zu gelangen.
